PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Behavioral Health Training Program at Salud Family Health offers opportunities for graduate-level practicum students and postdoctoral fellows. We aim to develop culturally competent primary care behavioral health providers who are prepared to work in integrated safety net settings as clinicians, educators, and administrators. Our goal is to provide trainees with clinical, consultative, and educational experiences that will inform their views of health and the healthcare system, as well as influence their approach to patient care.

As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to practice in integrated primary care settings while learning about policy, organizational, and management challenges that professional behavioral health providers often encounter in medical settings. As an organization, Salud values the development of health professionals, especially in integrated care settings; Salud views this training program as a fundamental aspect of both supporting sustainability in, and working towards overall improvement, of the health care field.

Unique Training Experience

  • Faculty who are experienced with and specifically trained in integrated primary care psychology and behavioral health

  • Bilingual faculty members; supervision can be provided in Spanish

  • Experience with providing clinical services in both in-person and telehealth formats

  • Diverse training cohort, including different educational backgrounds and nationalities

  • Faculty members with varied backgrounds, including a clinical pharmacist and family physician

  • 60% of the patient population are Latinx; 40% of patient population indicate Spanish as their preferred language

  • Monthly didactic (and seminar for postdoctoral fellows); curriculum focuses on developing competencies related to working in integrated primary care settings

  • Curriculum that includes:

    • Monthly lectures in psychopharmacology

    • Seminars that address Latinx health and cultural awareness

    • Monthly guest speakers who share their expertise in integrated models of care

    • For Postdoctoral Fellows only: seminars aimed at developing knowledge and skills pertaining to integrated care, leadership, policy, and advocacy; training in how to supervise bilingual/bicultural/international trainees

Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is a one-year position (salaried, with benefits) in integrated primary care psychology. Fellows function as an integral part of the health care team and work alongside other Behavioral Health Providers, including psychologists, social workers, counselors, and graduate-level trainees. Throughout the fellowship year, clinical supervision and training supplement the Fellow's direct clinical experience. Additionally, there are opportunities for teaching, supervision, research, and becoming involved in management and administration, as they arise and are consistent with the Fellow's interests. Satisfactory completion of the fellowship meets postdoctoral requirements for licensure in the state of Colorado.

Behavioral Health Externship

The Behavioral Health Externship is available to graduate students (Master's and Doctoral-level) in the following areas: social work, counseling, and psychology. Externs are exposed to preventative behavioral health services, including behavioral health screenings, consultation-based services, brief psychotherapy, assessments, and psychological testing (for doctoral students), across the lifespan and including all concerns that present in primary care clinics. Additionally, Externs learn how to address health factors as part of behavioral health interventions.

Training Location

Postdoctoral Fellows and Externs are assigned to one of Salud's clinics, typically at the Longmont, Brighton, and Commerce City locations; however, clinics' needs, available supervision, and trainees' preferences are all taken into consideration during the assignment process.

Clinics at Salud vary based size of the community, patient demographics, number of medical and behavioral health providers, and available community resources. The nature of the clinical work and supervision, however, is consistent across all clinics. Trainees are required to attend monthly didactics; typically these sessions are conducted virtually, but they are occasionally offered in-person at the Longmont or Commerce City clinics. Individual supervision can be scheduled virtually or in-person at either the trainee's assigned clinic or the supervisor's home clinic.
