Case Studies
»» The Children's Clinic/Salud Family Health Center Changes Lives
Three-year old Katie's physical development and speech were considerably delayed.
The toddler also suffered from chronic sinus infections. Katie's grandmother, who raises her, was understandably very worried. But when Katie was seen at the Children's Clinic/Salud Family Health Center, her life started to improve. Katie was diagnosed with and treated for allergies and an immune deficiency. Doctors also found Katie had fetal alcohol effect. Thanks to the clinic's intervention, Katie is now thriving and doing well in her Head Start class. She receives speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Katie's grandmother is grateful for the guidance, and resources that support her granddaughter.
»» Meet Some Other Families Helped by Our Clinic
12-year-old Ben long complained of stomach pain. He also struggled in school and was unable to complete tasks either there or at home. Even after Ben was home-schooled, he still was failing in his studies. Ben was finally diagnosed with and treated for attention deficit disorder, and the quality of life for he and his family improved greatly. Ben is now back in school, enjoys the Boy Scouts, and is doing well. His parents now come to the clinic with smiles.
Linda, a single mother and her two daughters, Anna and Erin, recently moved to Fort Collins and stayed for a time in a homeless shelter. While there, both girls received medical attention for previously diagnosed behavioral and seizure-related disorders. Anna sometimes experienced a loss of consciousness with her disorder, which required her to rest. Our staff worked with the shelter staff so she could stay there during the daytime. Now, this family is in their own home. Both girls continue to receive regular and
preventive health care at our clinic.

Investing in Families Strengthens the Entire Community
Every year, there are more children like Katie, Ben, Anna and Erin in northern Colorado. As our community grows, the number of low-income, uninsured, and underinsured children and families also rise. About 26,000 individuals, including 7,000 children and youth, in the Children's Clinic/Salud Family Health Center service area live at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. When these families struggling to make ends meet can't afford healthcare, the entire family suffers. Our whole community feels the impact, socially, educationally, and economically.
We invite you to partner with us and help children like Katie and their families achieve greater health and stability, and to reach their highest potential. Almost 15 years after the creation of our original Children's Clinic, we are renewing our commitment to better serve those who desperately need quality health care in our community.
We believe helping families like Katie's is a wise investment for our community because healthy families build healthy communities. We are asking the northern Colorado community to help us raise more than $2.75 million to renovate a building to expand our clinic, so we can effectively serve our growing low-income, uninsured population.
Our goal is to more than double the number of persons we serve with this expansion. We are currently only reaching about 38% of our target population, which leaves many people without adequate health support.
We believe our community can rise to this challenge and better support families needing medical coverage. Here are the features of our current clinic and our exciting vision for our new clinic, which we plan to complete by the end of 2005:
Current Clinic
- 8,000-square-foot medical facility
- 16 medical exam rooms and limited room for ancillary services
- Seven medical providers
- 9,600 patients annually
- 26,000 patient visits annually
- Only 38 percent of our target population now served
New Clinic
- Renovate an existing building at 1635 Blue Spruce Dr. to create a 20,000 square-foot medical facility
- 32 medical exam rooms
- 12 medical providers
- 15,000+ patients annually
- 48,000+ patient visits annually
- Offer expanded services such as mental health and substance abuse counseling, health education, nutrition support, case management, and medical social work.
- Double the number of patients served.

The Need is Critical
Because of life circumstances, many families in our community wake up each day unable to treat their children's infections, mental illness, developmental problems, and even life-threatening conditions. They simply can't afford the necessary treatments. How pervasive is this problem? About 11,000 children in Larimer County lack private health care coverage, research shows. About 100 new patients come to our clinic each month.

The Rewards are Tremendous
Reaching out to support these families benefits for us all. Overwhelming evidence shows that healthy families build healthy communities on all levels. Children with greater health have higher attendance rates at school, do better academically, and are more likely to go on to become productive members of our society. Adults with good health have much greater success at work and experience 10 to 30 percent higher annual earnings, which stimulates our entire economy.
Other advantages
- Healthy infants grow into healthy schoolchildren
- More preventive medicine
- Greater healthcare education and outreach
- Increased immunization rates
- Decreased teen pregnancy rates and infectious diseases
- Early intervention prevents chronic illnesses
- Less need for hospitalization and expensive
specialty medical care
- Improved prenatal care
- Reduction in mental illness
- Medical bankruptcies and medical bill collections
lowered
- Lower medical costs for low-income patients
- The medical savings are shared throughout our
local economy

History of the Children's Clinic
The Children's Clinic was born out of a dream that the low-income and uninsured children of Larimer Country would have full access to quality healthcare, regardless of their socioeconomic start in life. In 1989, Dr. Thomas Wera shone a light on the rising number of children in northern Colorado with no established medical care. Dr. Charles Collopy answered Dr. Wera's call to be the administrator of the new Children's Clinic to serve this population. When Dr. Collopy appealed to the Poudre Valley Hospital medical staff, 57 physicians immediately volunteered to help.
Now, almost 15 years later, the Children's Clinic has provided more than 100,000 patient visits. The clinic's well-child checks have increased 300 percent, while visits to the emergency room by our patients have dramatically decreased. We have had the joy and privilege of seeing infants grow into strong, healthy schoolchildren and go on to become fulfilled, active members of our community.
We have seen these individuals, in turn, begin to build their own loving families. We have indeed seen how healthy families build healthy communities.
A Chance for Our Community to Shine
The heart of Fort Collins has long been its strong and vibrant families. Generous support for the Children's Clinic helps us continue this tradition. We believe the Children's Clinic has historically been a successful initiative here-and is so integral to the overall quality
of life in our community.
The families you have met in this brochure and so many others like them illustrate why we believe the Children's Clinic is so successful-and so integral to the overall quality of life in our community.
Help us send a powerful message to these families and our entire community: We care about the welfare of our most challenged families. We invest in building healthy families because healthy families build a healthy community.
Thank you for your generous support. Most of all, thank you for your concern for the children and families of Fort Collins.
